Mary Teresa Barra (born December 24, 1961 as Mary Teresa Makela) is an American business executive. She is known as the Executive Vice President of Global Product Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain at General Motors. In August 2012, she was recognized as the 41st most powerful woman in the world by Forbes Magazine. On December 10, 2013, GM named her to be the next CEO to succeed Dan Akerson, making her the first female CEO of a major automaker. Barra is scheduled to take office as CEO in January 2014.
