The pope (from Latin: papa; from Greek: ÏάÏÏÎ±Ï (pappas), a child’s word for father) is the Bishop of Rome and the leader of the worldwide Catholic Church. In the Catholic Church, the Pope is regarded as the successor of Saint Peter, the Apostle. The current[update] office-holder is Pope Benedict XVI, who was elected in a papal conclave on 19 April 2005 and will hold office until 28 February 2013 after submitting his resignation on 11 February 2013.[nb 1]
