Selection Sunday

Remembrance sunday on black vectorThe selection process for College basketball’s NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships determines which teams (68 men’s, 64 women’s) will enter the tournaments (the centerpieces of the basketball championship frenzy known as “March Madness”) and their seedings and matchups in the knockout bracket. Thirty-one teams gain automatic entry through winning their conference’s championship (commonly through winning a conference tournament or, in the sole case of the Ivy League, the regular season title). The remaining teams (37 men’s, 33 women’s) rely on the selection committee to award them an at-large bid in the tournament. The selection process primarily takes place on Selection Sunday and the days leading up to it; Selection Sunday is also when the brackets and seeds are released to the public. (The women’s championship brackets and seeds are announced one day later, on Selection Monday.)

Bracketology

March Madness Tournament Bracket AdjustmentsBracketology is the process of predicting the field of the NCAA Basketball Tournament, named as such because it is commonly used to fill in tournament brackets for the postseason. It incorporates some method of predicting what the NCAA Selection Committee will use as its Ratings Percentage Index in order to determine at-large (non-conference winning) teams to complete the field of 68 teams, and, to seed the field by ranking all teams from first through sixty-eighth. ESPN’s Joe Lunardi is the inventor of the term “bracketology”, starting first as the owner and editor of the Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook and ending up as the resident bracketologist on ESPN. He also teaches an online course at Saint Joseph’s University titled “Fundamentals of Bracketology”. Although Lunardi invented the term, he is ranked only 23rd in the past four years’ results of the tournament. In recent years the concept of bracketology has been applied to areas outside of basketball.

Leprechaun

LeprechaunA leprechaun (Irish: leipreachán) is a type of fairy in Irish folklore, usually taking the form of an old man, clad in a red or green coat, who enjoys partaking in mischief. Like other fairy creatures, leprechauns have been linked to the Tuatha Dé Danann of Irish mythology. The Leprechauns spend all their time busily making shoes, and store away all their coins in a hidden pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. If ever captured by a human, the Leprechaun has the magical power to grant three wishes in exchange for their release. Popular depiction shows the Leprechaun as being no taller than a small child, with a beard and hat, although they may originally have been perceived as the tallest of the mound-dwellers (the Tuatha Dé Danann).
