Philae /ËfaɪliË/ (Greek: Φιλαί Philai; Ancient Egyptian: Pilak, P’aaleq; Arabic: ÙÙÙÙâ [fiËlÉ]) is an island in Lake Nasser, Egypt. It is located within the former First Cataract of the Nile River in southern Egypt, though the rapids have been eliminated since the construction of the Aswan Dam. Philae was the site of an Ancient Egyptian temple complex, which was dismantled and relocated to nearby Agilkia Island as part of the UNESCO Nubia Campaign project, protecting this and other complexes before the 1970 completion of the Aswan Dam. The Philae temple complex site had been partially underwater for years, since the 1902 completion of the Aswan Low Dam.
