The Steam Machine is a microconsole that will be manufactured and distributed by a number of vendors based on design specifications outlined by Valve Corporation. A line of Steam Machines are designed to run SteamOS, an operating system based on Linux that expands the features of the Steam distribution platform for games and applications. The Steam Machine reflects Valve’s trend in moving away from closed operating systems such as Microsoft Windows and OS X to open-source systems that introduce the ability to play games on Steam in the living room. Valve is developing a touchscreen-based controller that will work with SteamOS on Steam Machines and Steam on PCs.
