Three young women from Cleveland, Ohio, Amanda Berry, Georgina “Gina” DeJesus, and Michelle Knight, had been missing for between nine and eleven years when they were found alive on May 6, 2013. They were freed from a house belonging to a man named Ariel Castro, one of the suspects in their disappearances, 3 miles (4.8 km) from where they had disappeared. A six-year-old daughter of Amanda Berry also escaped.
