On December 14, 2012, Adam Lanza shot 28 people, including 20 children, at Sandy Hook Elementary School in the Sandy Hook village of Newtown, Connecticut, before killing himself. All except three children died at the scene; the three in critical condition were transported to hospitals, where two died of their injuries. The school shooting occurred after he shot his mother, a volunteer at the school, at her nearby home. It was the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history, after the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre.
